"So far, the Korean peninsula issues are developing mostly in the direction China is hoping for - and after the Kim-Trump summit in Singapore, China's role will definitely be bigger".
A meeting between the leaders of both South Korea and North Korea in April also boosted optimism and intrigue in the city. Pundits gave obligatory acknowledgment of North Korea's human rights abuses but offered little criticism of why Trump didn't bring those issues up to Kim.
Trump had agreed to halt joint military exercises with South Korea after the North Korea summit.
In follow-up talks on the establishment of new relations, the US and North Korea will likely hold discussions on ending hostilities.
"We hope that the outcomes of the US-DPRK Summit will be implemented, thus paving the way for lasting peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula", the ministry said.
