CBSSports.com's projections had the Lakers as a 29-win team before the signing was announced. Most players are signing for the veteran's minimum at that point in their career. There was no indication of whether the Lakers planned to give him any say over the roster, but that could be an important factor given that LeBron ended his free agency in less than 20 hours and could help shape the team's strategy going forward. Players with 7-9 years of experience, can earn a max salary of $30.3 million.
James, who has a home and production company in Los Angeles, joins a team with plenty of money to spend under the National Basketball Association salary cap and a desire to rebuild into a championship team after years of struggles.
At 33 years old, James signed a four-year, $153.3 million deal, his longest contractual commitment since 2010. With Cousins coming off an injury, the Lakers may be able to get Cousins at a discount.
"If he leaves, that's not a good deal for them financially", an Eastern Conference executive told Bleacher Report's Ken Berger prior to James' move. Now that he's in Los Angeles, that's impossible. Another option for the Lakers is to acquire Kawhi Leonard through a trade. Vegas also has the Lakers as the favorites. His deal doesn't include a no-trade clause but an opt-out after the third year.
As things stand now, Smith's projections have the Lakers with $59.96 million of cap space for 2019.
Now, Stephenson will try to prove he can fit in with a team other than the Pacers.
LeBron in 'good dialogue' with Cavaliers
Their only pure point guard on the roster is 32-year-old George Hill, so Sexton is a fit. Sexton is only 19 and his one weakness is outside shooting -.336 from 3-point range.
Back in 2016 it was announced that director Justin Lin was teaming up with James to put together a sequel to Space Jam, a film that starred National Basketball Association legend Michael Jordan.
Just today, Russian Federation knocked off Spain, LeBron James announced his intentions to sign with Los Angeles Lakers and now, LeBron's long-time playoff foil Lance Stephenson is following him to Hollywood. James added: "So I don't have an answer for you right now as far as that". He's also taken his talents to a conference that put his streak of reaching eight consecutive NBA Finals at risk but allows him a greater chance of improving his Finals record. Short contracts are the new normal.
His departure would create some more question marks for the Lakers, especially who will be in the frontcourt alongside Kyle Kuzma.
