OAKLAND BART police announced Monday evening that a man suspected of stabbing two sisters on a BART platform, leaving one dead, has been arrested. Police stopped the train at Pleasant Hill station, where officers boarded and arrested Cowell without incident.
Nia Wilson, 18, was murdered at a BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) station in Oakland on Sunday night, and her 26-year-old sister, Lahtifa, was taken to the hospital.
Surveillance video on the train and at the station's platform showed Cowell had been riding the same vehicle as the sisters Sunday, but they did not interact, Rojas said.
BART spokesman Jim Allison said, "Police have train video and station video and other identifying material and they are following those leads right now". "We haven't connected him to any type of radical group or white supremacist group or anything like that", BART Police Chief Carlos Rojas said.
Rojas said officers were at the MacArthur Station at the time of Sunday's deadly attack.
John Leen Cowell, 27, a transient parolee with a violent criminal history, is accused of viciously slashing Nia Wilson with a knife before stabbing her sister, Letifah Wilson, and fleeing the scene at the MacArthur BART station, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Wilson said a woman with a stroller gave her a baby blanket to apply pressure to her sister's neck, but Nia Wilson died calling out her sister's name for help.
Rojas said police found the murder weapon at a nearby construction site. Nia Wilson succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wilson said she told her sister she loved her.
Weather outlook: Tracking rain and storms
Steadier showers will move in late with some thunderstorms and pockets of moderate to heavy rain that could bring flash flooding. There's a 60 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before noon Thursday; the high is expected to reach 84 degrees.
Images of an at-large homicide suspect have been released by BART officials following a killing early Saturday morning at the agency's Bay Fair station in San Leandro, according to BART today.
Daryle Allums, Nia's godfather, called on the Black community to wait for the answers before reacting to speculation about whether or not the attack was motivated by hate.
On Sunday night, Nia Wilson was walking on the subway platform with her sisters when a man stabbed her in an unprovoked attack, according to the Bay Area Rapid Transit officials.
"We gotta talk about Black girls, and Black women, and Black babies", Brooks said.
"All of a sudden, we transfer, just to get blindsided by a maniac", Lahtifa Wilson said Monday, a thick bandage covering the side of her neck. His image was captured on surveillance video. The movement is called "Say Her Name". I appreciate the commitment of these establishments to prohibit such activity in their businesses and then chose to hold a "Pro Oakland Movement" event this evening to support organizations that fight bigotry and discrimination on behalf of our community and our values.
Mayor Libby Schaaf in a statement identified the teen who died as Nia Wilson and said the Oakland Police Department is assisting in the investigation.
"We have two subjects with two lacerations", a man says over loud background noise and people yelling.
Court documents show a restraining order was filed in April 2016 by Kaiser Foundation against Cowell. He was apprehended on Monday night (July 23) on a train after an anonymous tipster contacted the authorities, and he remains in police custody.
