The Kremlin said this week that although Washington and Moscow agreed there was a need for another Putin-Trump meeting, Russian Federation had not yet begun any practical preparations for a new meeting.
The US leader himself, under fire over plans to invite Putin to the White House in the fall, opted to delay until 2019 - pushing the talks back until Robert Mueller has completed his probe into Moscow's election interference, according to National Security Advisor John Bolton.
Bolton said they agreed the meeting would be "after the first of the year".
"President Putin, he just said it's not Russian Federation".
Pompeo confirmed, however, that Trump and Putin had discussed solutions to the war in Syria, where Moscow and Iran have supported forces of Syrian regime leader Bashar al Assad.

The statement went on to say that Crimea had joined Russian Federation based on "the right of a people to self-determination".

Its activation came after Israel on two separate occasions this month fired Patriot missiles at incoming drones from Syria. It also also tweeted that the "civilians were subsequently transferred to a neighbouring country".
Pompeo said he had been comprehensively briefed on Trump's one-on-one meeting with Putin, who USA intelligence agencies said knew about Russia's meddling in the election.
Trump has previously suggested that US opposition to Russia's annexation of Crimea could be reconsidered.
Days later, a Microsoft executive said the company had discovered a spear-phishing campaign by Russian military intelligence targeting at least three candidates in this year's elections.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday, prior to the announcement, that the USA would never recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea and demanded that Ukraine's territorial integrity be restored.
Citing the 213 sanctions on Russian entities and individuals since the Trump administration assumed office, Pompeo said "with respect to Russia, this administration has been tougher than previous administrations, and I fully expect it will".
It also wasn't clear upon what basis Bolton believes that Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller, whose investigation Trump calls the "witch hunt" to which Bolton alluded, might be finished by December 31.
Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen and Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey also wrote a letter to the White House urging Trump to act on the recent arrests.
It's possible the Russians feel so fortunate about their big propaganda win at the Helsinki summit that they don't want to jinx themselves by returning to that well so soon.
