Viktor and Amalija Knavs, Melania Trump's Slovenian-born parents, took the oath of citizenship in NY on Thursday, their lawyer confirmed, BBC reported.
Viktor and Amalija Knavs are retired, and they maintain regular contact with the Trump family, often traveling with the first family on trips to Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster, New Jersey.
Their lawyer said the couple had met the five-year requirement, but added, "I can't give further comment".
"Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives", Trump told the nation, adding that part of his fourth pillar, "chain immigration" practices were coming to an end. Born as Melanija, the First Lady changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modelling.
Under US law they must have been permanent residents for five years before applying to become citizens, and the time to process an application can take several months thereafter. Homeland Security Police also escorted the Knavs both in and out of the ceremony, which was held at a federal building in Manhattan.

The Slovenian immigrants, a former auto dealer and textile factory worker, had been living in the U.S. as permanent residents.

Melania Trump became a United States citizen in 2006, after entering the U.S. on a coveted Einstein visa for people of "extraordinary ability" in 2001 when she was working as a model.
