Pressley will become the first black member of the House from MA, as there are no Republicans running in this district in the general election. Shortly after her win, Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley.
The race between Capuano and Pressley was perhaps the most closely watched contest in MA, especially since Pressley drew comparisons to Ocasio-Cortez.
Pressley also won the district's parts of Cambridge and Milton. @AyannaPressley just shook up the world with her congressional victory.
Another veteran congressman, Democratic Rep. Richard Neal, won a spirited primary showdown with Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a black attorney from Springfield who had hoped to become the first Muslim to serve in Congress from MA. She joins a number of other black women who've won their primaries this year, including Stacey Abrams, who's running for governor in Georgia, Lauren Underwood, running for a congressional seat in IL, and Jahana Hayes, who's also running for a seat in Congress from CT. "These times require and this district deserves bold, activist leadership".
Her mother also taught her that it was both a right and a duty to vote and hold government accountable, Pressley said.
One of their most significant differences was over the tactics of former National Football League quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Tedeschi has some name recognition from his family's franchise of 200 convenience stores.
Pressley lives in the Dorchester neighbourhood of Boston with her husband, Conan Harris, and stepdaughter.
