SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced the first paying tourist that the company plans to fly around the moon on a 386,243km journey on its promised Big Falcon Rocket (BFR)-and it's Japanese billionaire, founder of online fashion giant Zozo, and art collector Yusaku Maezawa.
In an unexpected twist to the proceedings, Maezawa said that he didn't want to have "such a fantastic experience" all by himself.
He said: "In 2023, as the host, I would like to invite six to eight artists from around the world to join me on this missions to the Moon". The event, held in SpaceX's Southern California headquarters, will be broadcast live via a YouTube stream.
Maezawa's project will be called Dear Moon. "What if Picasso had gone to the moon, or Andy Warhol, or Michael Jackson, or John Lennon, or Coco Chanel?"
Falcon Heavy's maiden flight was shown as part of SpaceX's evolution towards BFR.
The average distance from Earth to the moon is about 237,685 miles (382,500 kilometres). These people will hail from a variety of disciplines, potentially including painters, sculptors, photographers, musicans, film directors, fashion designers, architects and more, he said.

The 59-year-old's preferred playing style, which sees his team play short, snappy passes, certainly suits the Brazilian. He has won everything with the club, so it's up to him.
In an interview in March, Musk said the ship was now being built, adding "I think we'll probably be able to do short flights, short sort of up-and-down flights, probably sometime in the first half of next year". Musk described Maezawa as incredibly fearless.
According to Musk's presentation [PDF] past year, the mighty BFR will stand 118 metres tall when erected on its launchpad, and will be able to lift 150 tons into low Earth orbit with the help of a massive central booster, making it the most powerful rocket ever to fly.
The trip will be made using SpaceX's BFR: its Big Falcon Rocket (or Big F**king Rocket, depending on how much someone's been smoking). Twelve walked on the lunar surface.
Besides the changed fins, with improve the aerodynamic control of the vehicle when entering an atmosphere, the updated spaceship now has seven Raptor engines identical to the ones on the booster stage.
He also mentioned the fact that SpaceX narrowly came into existence. For this, he said, it is important to build technologies like the BFR that are capable of carrying a vast number of materials and resources. Musk said houses equipped with Tesla's Solar Roof would feed energy to Powerwall, a sleek storage unit created to act as an electricity fill-up station for both the house and a Tesla electric vehicle.
So, artists, who wants to go to the moon?
