Brett Kavanaugh has heard the complaints about his poor judicial temperament and on Thursday, the judge who last week said sexual assault allegations against him were a conspiracy launched by Donald Trump's enemies, attempt a mea culpa.
"At that time, I thought (Kavanaugh) had the qualifications for the Supreme Court should he be selected", Stevens said.
A GoFundMe campaign has raised close to $600,000 ($A850,000) for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and his family following allegations of sexual misconduct against him dating back more than three decades.
And the newspaper says Stevens says he thinks "there's merit to that criticism and I think the senators should really pay attention that". And with a confirmation vote coming as soon as this weekend, they're running out of time to change their minds.
Stevens decried the partisan politics that have shrouded the judiciary branch in recent years.
Federal Bureau of Investigation report 'shows no Kavanaugh misconduct'
Both said they wanted the FBI investigation, and both denounced Trump's mockery of Ford this week in Mississippi. In the case of a 50-50 tie, Vice President Mike Pence might break it in favor of Kavanaugh.
'It is the nation's confidence in the judge as impartial guardian of the rule of law'. "It's not healthy to get a new justice who can only do a par-time job", Stevens said. "And it's not so clear that, you know, I think going forward that sort of middle position - you know, it's not so clear whether we'll have it". In his retirement, he has called for the Second Amendment to be repealed.
He criticized the First Amendment flag-burning case in 1989, and Thursday stood by the stance that the act of flag-burning should be illegal. Though a Republican, he sided with the liberal judges in dissenting on Bush v. Gore. During the hearing, Kavanaugh consistently harassed Democratic Senators, asking them what alcohol they preferred, and if they had ever blacked out.
"We live in this world where it's just the nine of us", Kagan said.
Throughout his tenure as a Supreme Court justice, Stevens made some controversial decisions.
"The attacks on Kavanaugh are politics, but they've evolved to nearly brutality like the Roman Colosseum", Udell said. In the past several weeks, he has been accused of engaging in gang rapes and sexual misconduct dating back more than three decades - claims that he has denied and that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in a supplemental inquiry concluded earlier this week, could not corroborate.
But his Senate confirmation process had been roiled by the allegations from Dr Christine Blasey Ford and took place amid an atmosphere of bitter political partisanship in Washington.
