Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was located 20 miles south of the island's southern tip of Mouzaki.
Power was lost in the island capital and main town, also called Zakynthos, for several hours and outages were also reported elsewhere.
USGS said the quake measured 6.8 and struck at a depth of 16.6 kilometres (10 miles).
