The man police say was driving a truck that killed three Girl Scouts and a woman in Wisconsin had been "huffing," or intentionally inhaling chemical fumes, police said Monday.
Judy Schneider, the mother of Sara Jo Schneider and Haylee's grandmother, told The Associated Press in an interview Monday that after the crash she wondered, "What was the driver thinking?"
- The driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash with a Girl Scout troop that was picking up trash on the side of the road in Wisconsin Saturday is now facing charges, including homicide.
According to Newell, police responded to an emergency call on the afternoon of October 30.
Police said four children and an adult, who were questioned pointed accusing fingers at the 10-year-old girl.
Authorities identified the girls as 9-year-old Jayna Kelley and 10-year-old Autum Helgeson, both of Lake Hallie, and 10-year-old Haylee Hickle, from the Town of Lafayette. The mother of one of the girls killed said she was standing near her daughter when the truck came crashing toward them. Authorities had removed her from the custody of her biological parents in September.
Treu said he did not pass out, but he did lose controlling of the vehicle and fishtailed after his passenger grabbed the steering wheel from him.
Mac Miller's Cause of Death Revealed
Rapper Mac Miller's cause of death was revealed on November 5, and coroner's say he died of a mixture of fentanyl and cocaine. Prince died at 57 in April 2016, and a medical examiner ruled it an accidental overdose, finding fentanyl in his system.
Schneider's mother, Judy Schneider, said her daughter and granddaughter's deaths are "still not real for any of us", and her 6-year-old grandson, Jasper, can't grasp what happened.
The fatal incident was similar to one in September, when Treu crashed his vehicle and police found methamphetamine and THC in it, Newell said in court.
6, 2018, 11 charges were filed against Colten Treu include four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of a hit-and-run resulting in death.
Treu is accused of huffing before a crash that happened Saturday.
Lake Hallie Police Sergeant Daniel Sokup said Mr Treu's black Ford F-150 ute crossed a lane and veered into a roadside ditch, striking the victims.
"It's not such a good morning for Chippewa County", Kowalczyk said to open a news conference about both matters.
