The man police say was driving a truck that killed three Girl Scouts and a woman in Wisconsin had been "huffing," or intentionally inhaling chemical fumes, police said Monday.
Judy Schneider, the mother of Sara Jo Schneider and Haylee's grandmother, told The Associated Press in an interview Monday that after the crash she wondered, "What was the driver thinking?"
- The driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run crash with a Girl Scout troop that was picking up trash on the side of the road in Wisconsin Saturday is now facing charges, including homicide.
According to Newell, police responded to an emergency call on the afternoon of October 30.
Police said four children and an adult, who were questioned pointed accusing fingers at the 10-year-old girl.
Authorities identified the girls as 9-year-old Jayna Kelley and 10-year-old Autum Helgeson, both of Lake Hallie, and 10-year-old Haylee Hickle, from the Town of Lafayette. The mother of one of the girls killed said she was standing near her daughter when the truck came crashing toward them. Authorities had removed her from the custody of her biological parents in September.
Treu said he did not pass out, but he did lose controlling of the vehicle and fishtailed after his passenger grabbed the steering wheel from him.

Lake Hallie Police Sergeant Daniel Sokup said Mr Treu's black Ford F-150 ute crossed a lane and veered into a roadside ditch, striking the victims.
