With Sessions out, longtime Trump ally Matthew Whitaker is now serving as acting Attorney General and assuming oversight of the Mueller investigation. One of those offices, in NY, is leading an investigation involving the president's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, and hush money payments Cohen says he made to two women who say they had sex with Trump.
U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced his resignation on Wednesday after unrelenting criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump over his recusal from an investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential race. With the election to the House of many young and left-leaning lawmakers on the Democratic side, including many women, the stage appears set for a fractious and contentious two years before the 2020 Presidential election, which Trump confirmed at the Press Conference would have Mike Pence as his running mate.
Trump repeatedly lamented that he would have never selected Sessions if he had known the attorney general would recuse himself.
The interview came shortly after Comey was sacked by Trump and while Whitaker, then the head of a conservative nonprofit group, was a regular commentator on right-leaning media.
"He wants a political crony to protect him from the investigation of his own campaign", she said.

The next month, Whitaker wrote an op-ed posted on CNN's website in which he argued that Mueller's investigation appeared to be going too far and may constitute a "witch hunt", echoing one of Trump's favorite descriptions to criticize and discredit the probe. The Trump administration is going to be investigated over Russian Federation, taxes, voter ID laws, any aspect of this White House the Left hates was going to be put under the microscope now that Democrats have retaken the House.
Trump was only a few weeks into his presidency in March 2017 when Sessions upset him by stepping aside from overseeing an Federal Bureau of Investigation probe of potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. Whitaker is poised to take over the Russian Federation investigation, a probe he has criticized in the past.
In theory, Whitaker could order Mueller to limit the scope of his investigation or end it altogether.
When Democrats assume control of House committees next year, they will direct everything from the subject matter of investigations to the timing and substance of committee hearings.
Special counsel Robert Mueller was appointed in May.
