Diversity also won the day Tuesday with a record number of women of color headed to the halls of Congress. Democrats have also crowed, loudly and often, about the number of women they had on the ballot - many of whom won last night.
That means at least 117 women will serve in the 116th Congress, up from the current 107.
The class of 2019 includes the youngest congressional women in history, 29-year-olds Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from NY and Abby Finkenauer from Iowa, as well as the first two Native American women, and the first two Muslim women, Palestinian-American Rashida Tlaib and Somali-American Ilhan Omar.

Omar's district has become increasingly foreign-born with now nearly 15 percent of the region being born outside of the U.S. As MPR News notes, more than 35 percent of the district is nonwhite and there are 22,000 more foreign-born residents living in the district since Rep. Keith Ellison - the first Muslim elected to Congress - was first elected in 2008. 65 of those are incumbent reps, with 31 newly elected women.
"So for us, this is about inspiring people to the polls, giving them something to vote for, creating hope for this nation, and knowing that so long as there are working class Americans who believe in a prosperous and just future we will have hope, no matter how red the district", she said.

That's a big part of the story of 2018: many demographic groups swinging far more Democratic than they did in 2014, a wave year for Republicans. In 1982, 58 per cent of women voted for Democrats and 41 per cent voted for Republicans. The share of women identifying as Democrats or leaning Democratic is up 4 percentage points since 2015 and is at one of its highest points since 1992.
