Over the next few weeks Pelosi will try to win over enough naysayers within her own party to nail down a victory in early January when the full House convenes to elect a new speaker. Among the changes she agreed to were one that would make it easier for "consensus" bills - those that gain at least 290 cosponsors - to get a vote on the House floor, and for bipartisan amendments, with at least 20 members of each party supporting them, to be considered in committees.
"I am disappointed to report that no agreement was reached in this initial meeting", Moulton said. Nobody came to me, and at this point, I think it's unreasonable for anyone to expect a vote when they haven't even asked.
Pelosi predicted their opposition will not stymie her speakership.
In fact, Democrats voted to return their entire top leadership team, including Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland in the No. 2 spot as majority leader and Rep. Jim Clyburn of SC in the No. 3 spot as whip.
On top of that, nine Democrats in the bipartisan group called the Problem Solvers Caucus have vowed to oppose her unless she backs several rules reforms created to make it easier for rank-and-file members to advance bipartisan bills.
The House speaker sets the chamber's legislative agenda and is second, behind the vice president, in the line of succession to the president. "That's why I appreciate that Leader Pelosi has embraced input from new voices on rules changes that we'll be voting on as soon as the new Congress is sworn in and I'll continue to push for that vote". Organizers say only with a floor fight in view will new leaders emerge.
"She's battle tested and no one else has demonstrated that they can do what she can do", Democratic strategist Doug Thornell said.
The race for Speaker of the House in Washington intensified again Wednesday with Rep. Nancy Pelosi winning the nomination to be Speaker beginning in January.

China aims to persuade the USA not to impose the larger tariffs, but Trump said it was " highly unlikely " he would back down. Once the chain is broken, the United States would be affected too'.
"The reality is there is no alternative", said Rep. Brian Higgins, D-N.Y., who had signed on to the letter opposing her but reversed course after Pelosi tapped him to lead his effort to expand Medicare options to those age 50 to 65.
On Wednesday, Ms Pelosi, 78, won with a simple majority in a secret ballot by House Democrats.
Moulton's letter signers hoped to create the opportunity for other candidates to run for Speaker, the aide said.
No one has stepped forward to directly challenge Pelosi in Wednesday's party election.
There are two main reasons why no other Democrat is running for speaker.
On Monday, one of the congressional rebels, Seth Moulton of MA, said he was open to negotiations with her. Our majority came on the backs of candidates who said that they would support new leadership because voters in hard-won districts, and across the country, want to see real change in Washington.
Pelosi is expected to win Wednesday's internal caucus election but the California Democrat still faces opponents as she tries to shore up support before whole House votes on speaker in January. "This is a process whereby you've got a vote, which provides you with some leverage, and you have a voice, and the best thing you can do is articulate in a convincing way what it is you want to do and why you want to do it".
