Botham Jean's parents Bertrum and Allison Jean spoke at a press conference today (Friday, November 30, 2018) following a Dallas County grand jury indicting Amber Guyger for murder in the shooting death of their St. Lucian son.
Guyger has claimed she mistakenly entered Jean's apartment, believing it was her own and she shot what she believed was an intruder the night of September 6 at the Southside Flats. "I look forward to the next step, which is a conviction of murder for Amber Guyger and more so to the penalty, which will cause her to reflect on the pain she has caused".
She described it as a "tragic event" and asked people to pray for Jean's family. "He didn't deserve that".
Lee Merritt, the Jean family attorney, said at a news conference Friday that the murder charge was a rare example of a US police officer being charged with murder for violence against a black man. Johnson said at the time that the grand jury could upgrade the charges, which it did Friday. Allison, his mother, said her country "has been on alert with the expectation that the grand jury will have returned with an indictment of murder".
Incoming Dallas District Attorney John Creuzot previously said the defendant should've been charged with murder off the bat. She said she thought he was an intruder.
Jean's relatives joined the district attorney for the announcement of the charge.
"She heard, 'Let me in, ' followed by 'Let me in, ' in an elevated tone and then she heard more pounding at the door", Merritt said. My church membership have all been praying and all St Lucians and church members over the world have been standing with us and I'm truly grateful for that.

Liverpool players can hardly be blamed for being angry, yet a 15-second clip has emerged showing that they perhaps can't complain too much.
How disgusting for the attorney to say a charge of murder for a woman who gunned down a man in his own home is "vindictive emotion". "There was a lot of political pressure that seemed to play a role in how the DA handled this", Rogers said. "I'm comfortable that all of the evidence and the work that they have been doing throughout the investigation will lead to what is the right thing". It's an indictment.it doesn't mean anything. "We are confident that a dispassionate jury in a fair forum will objectively apply the law to the facts and find Amber not guilty".
Guyger's attorneys say it was not an intentional act of murder and plan to prove it in a jury trial.
Her husband took the microphone next, saying that their family is "hurting deeply" but take solace by the indictment. "He felt safe in that apartment and he was violated by her coming in, and murdering him", she added.
She was terminated on September 24 after a hearing by the police department's internal affairs bureau. The chief outlined some of her policy changes.
After the shooting, Guyger's blood was drawn to be tested for alcohol and drugs, according to Hall. Guyger lived in unit 1378, while Jean lived directly one floor above, in unit 1478 at the South Side Flats in Dallas.
According to an affidavit filed against Perez, police were looking for a suspect when Guyger and another officer were called to assist a third officer.
