Israel's military said Thursday night that Syria fired a missile at the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights after Damascus said Israel launched airstrikes on targets in southern Syria.
The area where the incident is said to have occurred is where Lebanon's Hezbollah, a group backed by Iran, has its communications and logistics hub for southern Syria near the Israeli border, according to two senior regional intelligence sources.
In October, Moscow equipped Damascus with the advanced S-300 surface-to-air missiles, days after Israeli fighter jets attacking Syrian targets used a Russian surveillance plane flying nearby as a shield and misled the Syrian air defenses to shoot it down.
Israeli officials said Friday it found fragments likely from a Syrian anti-aircraft missile in a field in the Golan Heights.
For its part, the Israeli military denied any of its assets were hit, but stopped short of denying it had conducted strikes.
Two missiles hit "weapons depots belonging to the Lebanese Hezbollah (militant group) as well as Iranian forces" in Kisweh, and another missile hit the area of Harfa, where there is a Syrian military base, the Britain-based monitor said.
The state news agency said the attack was foiled and did not admit to any losses.
Israeli police recommend Netanyahu and his wife be charged with corruption
Police say there is enough evidence to charge Elovitch with bribery, interfering with an investigation, and financial crimes. He is also suspected of negotiating favorable press coverage with the Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Arnon Mozes in Case 2000.
"It's bogus", an Israeli military spokesman told Reuters in reference to a Russian RIA news agency report that made the claim.
The source said that all of the missiles aimed at the town of Kiswah, south of the capital Damascus, were shot down before landing on their targets.
The Syrian air defenses responded to "enemy targets" in the countryside of the capital Damascus on Thursday evening, state TV reported.
The area south of Damascus has been targeted by alleged Israeli strikes in the past.
In recent months, Israel has carried out a number of military operations inside Syrian territory targeting Syrian and Iranian military sites.
The Russian government said the 17 September incident - in which 15 Russian crew members were killed - only took place because Israel was conducting air strikes against Syrian targets at the time.
