Mueller is believed to be investigating whether Comey's firing and other actions amount to obstruction of justice by the president.
Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort was charged as part of the investigation by the special counsel Robert Mueller into allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
The White House has described The New York Times story as absurd.
In the interview President Trump said he probably would not agree to a sit-down interview with Mr. Mueller, who also is investigating whether the Republican President's campaign conspired with Moscow and whether President Trump has unlawfully sought to obstruct the probe. Jordan blasts Democrat for pursuing Trump impeachment on first day of new Congress MORE in 2017, the Federal Bureau of Investigation launched an inquiry into whether Trump was working for Russia, The New York Times reports.
The Times also reported that "some former law enforcement officials outside the investigation have questioned whether agents overstepped" in opening an investigation into that angle.
US Official Overseeing Mueller Probe to Leave
Barr, Graham said, told him he didn't think Mueller was on a "witch hunt", as Trump has branded the Mueller probe. But he has been a frequent target of President Donald Trump's criticism.
The Times reports that FBI agents and some top officials became suspicious of Trump's ties to Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential campaign but didn't launch an investigation at that time because they weren't sure how to approach such a sensitive and important probe, according to the sources.
"The fact that it goes back a year and a half and nothing came of it that showed a breach of national security means they found nothing", Giuliani told the paper. Russian Federation also has denied collusion.
"I have no concerns about Cohen at all because I can prove with very little effort that he is a total, complete and absolute liar", Giuliani said.
There has been no communication between either the special counsel or the president's legal team since before Christmas, Mr. Giuliani told Reuters. Trump also plays a central role in a separate case in NY, where prosecutors have implicated him in a crime.
"Unlike President Obama, who let Russian Federation and other foreign adversaries push America around, President Trump has actually been tough on Russian Federation", the statement concluded.
The investigation the FBI opened into Trump also had a criminal aspect, which has always been publicly known: whether his firing of Comey constituted obstruction of justice. He maintained Mueller's investigators should first give the report to Trump's lawyers for review.
