A lack of workers at an air-traffic control facility in the Washington area prompted the FAA to stop inbound flights Friday to LaGuardia, one of the nation's busiest transportation hubs.
Representatives from the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which oversees LaGuardia and Newark airports, as well as Philadelphia International Airport, also did not immediately return a request for comment.
"The controllers that work at airports are taking up Uber jobs, or Lyft".
Friday's announcement by the FAA is significant because it is the first time there has been a shortage of air traffic controllers. The cause or exact number of the absences has not been reported.
The FAA's response so far has been that, "Safety is the top priority... Nothing else matters except safety", Rinaldi said. "As we have seen over the past 35 days, the pressures and strains of a shutdown are not sustainable".
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the delays "horrendous" and said Trump "must give up his racist wall and Republicans in Congress must vote now to end this shutdown".
Mary Campbell Jenkins said she was aboard a plane Friday on a tarmac in NY when the pilot announced that connecting flight information was limited "due to a ground stop here at LaGuardia due to the government shutdown". A ground stop was briefly issued at LaGuardia, but has since been lifted.
"When you're talking about safety in the airspace, now you're talking about operational things, and those are not protected", Soucie said, distinguishing between airline safety inspectors and the controllers that maintain the air traffic. "As with severe storms, we will adjust operations to a safe rate to match available controller resources". Airport employees across the country have failed to show up to work the past month of the partial government shutdown. President Trump and Congressional Democrats are still at stalemate over billions of dollars in funding for a wall along the USA border with Mexico, a key campaign promise.

Just after 11 a.m., the FAA posted on its website that Orlando was among major airports - including Miami and Atlanta - experiencing delays because flights were being held at their gates.

At Pearson airport in Toronto, at least 12 flights to the U.S by Air Canada, American, West Jet, and Delta were delayed by noon Friday, and another 7 cancelled.
"Air Canada has revised its ticketing policy for customers booked on affected flights to facilitate changes to bookings", the notice reads.
"Our crew members and customers are likely to face extended security lines, flight delays, and even cancellations", Hayes said.
