Janelle Monae remembers being frustrated at last year's Grammy Awards, where male acts dominated in nominations and the only woman competing for the night's top award, Lorde, didn't get a chance to perform onstage.
The music world hit the red carpet Sunday for the Grammys, with hip-hop royalty and a bevy of talented women leading the pack - and early awards going to top nominees Lady Gaga and Brandi Carlile. Gaga is set to perform her hit single "Shallow" alongside Mark Ronson, with whom she collaborated on the song for her film A Star Is Born.
Six of the best new artist nominees are women, including H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, Margo Price, Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith.
"As you go on that red carpet, as you take the stage, as you are with your teams and you're dealing with that anxiety and that pressure and you're feeling like you're falling into competition with your fellow women and sisters, know that that's not what this is about". "I am truly excited to be here hosting the Grammy Awards this year".
There'll be more news to come tonight.

Despite being heavily advertised as part of the show, Grande is not performing nor even attending the Sunday ceremony, after she felt producers "insulted" her by asserting too much control over her song choices.
On Thursday, Grande broke her silence and shot back at Ehrlich in a series of tweets.
This year, Academy voters did pass on nominating perennial favourites like Taylor Swift for the top three prizes of Album, Record and Song of the Year, relegating pop stars who reigned in years prior to lesser categories. "Thank you @RecordingAcad #Grammys #Grammy and my co-writers and Bradley I love you so much thank you", the pop star wrote Sunday night before the show.
Whittaker out of UFC 234 due to hernia surgery
Gastelum was set to face UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker in the card's main event Sunday (Australian time). UFC legend Anderson Silva broke down in tears as he prepares to make his long-awaited return at UFC 234 in Australia.
"I've got nothing to say, I'm speechless", she said.
As for other ways to watch the Grammys, you can also tune into American network CBS.
Some complained that a black artist should be involved in the tribute, while others said stronger vocalists should perform over Lopez.
Women were strongly represented at this year's Grammys.
The live ceremony in Los Angeles could see Cardi B take home her first ever Grammy and potentially become the first rapper since 2004 to win the coveted album of the year award for her "Invasion of Privacy".
Additionally, J Balvin, Young Thug, Ricky Martin and Arturo Sandoval will join Cabello for the show's opening, while Fantasia, Yolanda Adams and Andra Day will pay homage to the late Aretha Franklin. I am just grateful, I think.
"This song was No. 1 for 50 f**king weeks", she said, while also telling the band to stop playing. "Just the fact that this album has connected in such a way beyond my wildest dreams is just really cool".
