With that in the background, things heated up with two terse tweet responses Sunday night in which Omar suggested that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), a powerful pro-Israel interest group, paid members of Congress to support that country.
"It's now apparent to me that I spent lots of energy putting my 2012 tweet in context and little energy in disavowing the anti-Semitic trope I unknowingly used, which is unfortunate and offensive", she tweeted last month.
The latest antisemitic missive from Muslim Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) sparked heavy criticism from many, including Chelsea Clinton.
"Good that some Dems have condemned the disgraceful anti-Semitic remarks of Rep. Omar-but their words are empty unless Dem leaders remove her from the Foreign Affairs Committee", Steve Scalise of Louisiana, the second-ranking House Republican, said on Twitter.
She said she had not been aware of the historical context.
Ariana Grande: Grammy Awards boss 'lying' about performance
But Ariana Grande took a quick breather on Saturday, when the 25-year-old stopped to pet a fan's dog in West Hollywood. The album arrived amid much fanfare after Grande teased the record for weeks on her social media platforms.
"We call on the House leadership to take immediate action, so that the message is clear: anti-Semitism will not be tolerated", said Jonathan Greenblatt, the league's national director.
"For her apology to be believed, one would have to believe that she didn't know of the anti-Semitic trope that Jews use their money to control world politics", The Republican Jewish Coalition tweeted.
Rose, who is Jewish, wrote in a statement, "Congresswoman Omar's statements are deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself".
-Israeli relationship, highlighted by criticism from Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib of MI.
Republicans demanded that Omar be removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee, arguing that she should not be part of a panel which considers USA foreign policy in the Mideast.
The tweet came during Israel's Operation Pillar of Defense in the Gaza Strip that erupted when Israel killed chief Hamas' military wing Ahmed Jabari in an airstrike following escalation on the border that saw over 100 rockets launched into Israel within a 24-hour period. She has called the efforts to paint her as an anti-Semite a smear.
"We must speak out when any Member - Democrat or Republican - uses harmful tropes and stereotypes, levels accusations of dual loyalty, or makes reckless statements like those yesterday", they wrote. This kind of rhetoric and imagery has never been the exclusive province of left or right, and both Democrats and Republicans should be hyper-vigilant to ensure that it has no place in our political discourse. In fact, Jewish lawmakers in recent weeks have met to discuss what they should do about their new colleagues, who openly criticise Israel and have made insensitive comments about Jews and Jewish Americans. Such legislation includes financial support for Israel and measures that would ban boycotts of Israel, including the BDS movement that Omar and Tlaib support.
