Ocasio-Cortez shared her take on the scandal on Tuesday and suggested parents' using their wealth to secure their children's college spot was similar to that of politicians running for office.
Numerous children were unaware of their parents' activities.
The sums that authorities say the accused parents paid in bribes would, for many, finance a college education many times over. "Some pretended an injury and some played and then quit", he said.
Prosecutors say the scam guaranteed acceptance into top schools by fabricating what every college wants: high test scores.
"I guess college admissions isn't that different from elections, where lots of money can buy your spot too", the New York Representative wrote.
Singer, founder of the Edge College & Career Network of Newport Beach, California, pleaded guilty Tuesday. In telephone conversations intercepted by investigators, Singer brags he helped 760 students in just the first few months of 2018 and 96 the year before, while in other conversations he reassures parents that he has helped more than 20 or 30 other students cheat in recent years.
"There were essentially two kinds of fraud that Singer was selling", Lelling said of the accusations, which run from 2011 to 2019.
Huffman is one of numerous well-heeled defendants who allegedly took part in a scheme to get their children into elite universities through fraud, bribes and lies.

Attorney Andrew Lelling said at a press conference Tuesday that in other instances students faces were edited into photos of athletes.
For example, Singer and his co-conspirators used photo-editing technology to superimpose the face of a patron's student onto stock photos of athletes, prosecutors said. The parents would send payments to a charity that Singer created to help underprivileged youth, and the money would in turn be funneled to pay off the coaches.
Huffman, a former best actress Oscar nominee who is married to fellow actor William H. Macy, starred in the ABC TV series Desperate Housewives. His status at USC was unclear; his faculty profile has been removed from a website, and phone messages seeking comment were not returned. Huffman and Loughlin are among those charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.
Huffman spent hours in federal custody at a detention center in downtown Los Angeles. The court agreed that she will be allowed to continue filming in Vancouver.
Prosecutors say the coaches were bribed to indicate students were being considered as athletic recruits, because universities "typically apply different criteria when evaluating applications from students with demonstrated athletic abilities".
Ms Loughlin is expected to appear in court in Boston on Wednesday.
Coaches, including the women's soccer coach at Yale University and the sailing coach at Stanford University, took between $200,000 and $400,000 to accept the students onto their teams.
The University of Texas fired men's tennis coach Michael Center on Wednesday, a day after federal officials unveiled documents accusing Center of taking up to almost $100,000 to get a student into school by listing him as a tennis recruit. Neither student came to Stanford, the school said.
