The U.S. has been pushing back against China's technological expansion by asking that other countries refuse to adopt Huawei's 5G infrastructure, which Washington says poses security threats.
If Germany builds its 5G network using Huawei (huawei) technology, the US will limit the intelligence it shares.
Huawei recently filed a lawsuit against the United States government for labeling it a security risk and limiting its access to the American market.
The move would shake up Germany's security sector, which relies on intelligence from the NSA, CIA, and other American agencies.
Altmaier told a television talk show on Thursday that Germany did not want to ban Huawei but would change its laws to ensure all components used in the 5G networks are secure.

The bride and groom too made quite a statement - Akash Ambani in a dark bandhgala, and Shloka Mehta in a heavily embellished sari. Akash and Shloka's pre-wedding festivities started with a bang with parties after parties in St Moritz, Switzerland.
The letter follows similar warnings by President Donald Trump's administration urging allies to ban or restrict Huawei products from their 5G networks due to its ability to compromise national security by selling equipment with "backdoors" that could allow for unauthorised surveillance. Hence, the Chinese tech company is credible to bid for the country's 5G project.
The letter said companies like Huawei could compromise secure and confidential communications in defense and intelligence cooperation, including within North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
"The Americans will assume that everything we share with Germany will end up with the Chinese", a senior State Department official told WSJ. Further, the USA likely needs its allies to support the pushback against Huawei in order for the isolation tactic to have any meaningful effect. "The 5G networks our allies buy won't be the networks that they eventually operate, as the software could be changed on a moment-to-moment basis by the manufacturer".
The US has been using its clout to try and persuade other countries that it should boycott the company as it has done. According to a German interior ministry official familiar of the matter, the full list of conditions would be published six to eight weeks from now.
Last week, Huawei filed a lawsuit against the USA for restricting its agencies from the use of Huawei products, saying a law signed by President Donald Trump in August 2018 that barred it and fellow Chinese company ZTE from use in government work is unconstitutional.
