Lebanon's civil aviation authority said on Wednesday it has banned Boeing 737 MAX passenger jets from the country's airspace after a deadly plane crash in Ethiopia at the weekend.
Boeing is in crisis as airlines around the world ground the plane, with regulators from Australia to Europe denying it access to their airspace. "Hopefully we'll be able to resolve this issue in the coming weeks and get the Max 8 back up and flying, but for the moment, caution has to dominate". The company lost nearly US$27 billion in market value this week through Tuesday after posting the biggest two-day drop in nearly a decade.
Its shares were up by less than 1 percent Wednesday.
Jennifer Mehigan, a spokeswoman for Logan, said tat the grounded planes 737s make up less than 2 percent of the traffic to and from Logan. In total, there were at least 11 reports about the Boeing 737 MAX 8 logged on the Aviation Safety Reporting System between April 2018 and December 2018. He previously worked with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
Air Canada has 24 Max 8s and WestJet has 13 - six per cent and seven per cent of their fleets of 400 and 175 aircraft, respectively. Sunwing, a charter carrier, has four of the planes. The re-engined Max version has racked up more than 5,000 orders worth in excess of US$600 billion.
Jason Scarrotts, a father of two young children, said he was on the phone with Air Canada for 90 minutes before speaking with an agent to rebook their Max 8 flight from Vancouver to Palm Springs, only to be disconnected.
American, Southwest and United all fly them.
Following the first plane crash in October, Boeing issued a safety bulletin about the 737 Max 8 models.
Tyrann Mathieu to sign three-year, $42m deal with Kansas City Chiefs
Houston lost safety Tyrann Mathieu to the Kansas City Chiefs and defensive back Kareem Jackson to the Denver Broncos. His reported agreement with the Chiefs is for $42 million over three years, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Air Canada said it will grant affected customers on its roughly 75 daily Max 8 flights a full fee waiver - though that may not cover higher fares for a rebooked flight - along with "the ability to obtain a full refund". He stressed that it's not conclusive but that it was enough to order the safety measures.
"The result there is that the airplane tends to oscillate in this conflict between the software and the pilot", he said, making a wave motion with his hand, "and that's what had some similarities on the Ethiopian flight".
The decision comes following new satellite tracking information received by Canadian officials.
Ryder explained the airlines may try to cut the number of flights on some routes and replace the Max 8 jetliners with larger planes.
"The pilot was fighting against the computer software, which wanted to drop the nose of the aircraft" and "eventually there was a loss of control", said Garneau, a former astronaut.
As recently as last night, Garneau was telling fellow lawmakers it was too soon to reach conclusions.
The latest suspensions come as thousands of Canadians are away on March break, stoking fears of stranded passengers and rebooking delays.
"This was a great loss for our country, so it is something that has really viscerally caught the attention of Canadians", Garneau said.
